Dear friend,

If you’ve noticed your hair changing as you enter midlife, I want you to know you’re not alone in this journey. As one of Jacksonville’s most passionate hair color experts, I’ve worked with countless incredible women navigating hormonal shifts—and the hair changes that come with them. At our warm and welcoming Jacksonville hair salon, I’ve dedicated my career to understanding the unique needs of women in perimenopause, menopause, and beyond.

The best hair salon near you.

But more than that, I want you to know this: you’re not crazy, and you’re not doing anything wrong.

The Emotional Journey of Hormonal Hair Changes

Let’s have a heart-to-heart. Menopause unfolds in three phases:

  • Perimenopause: Hormone fluctuations begin (typically late 30s to early 40s)
  • Menopause: Your period officially stops (12 months with no cycle)
  • Postmenopause: The years after menopause, when hormonal levels remain low

Each stage affects your hair in deeply personal ways. I’ve made it my mission to become an expert in how these changes impact not just your hair—but your confidence and identity.

Perimenopause: When Your Hair First Starts to Change

What I hear from clients every week:

  • “Why is my brush full of hair all of a sudden?”
  • “My texture feels so rough and dry—what happened?”
  • “Why are these gray hairs so wiry?”

Hormonal changes begin long before your period disappears. In perimenopause, estrogen and progesterone start to fluctuate. This allows DHT (dihydrotestosterone) to become more dominant. DHT is a byproduct of testosterone that shrinks hair follicles and shortens the hair growth cycle—leading to thinning, shedding, and frustrating changes in texture.

This isn’t vanity. This is biology.

Solutions that help:

  • Ask your doctor to check your ferritin (stored iron), vitamin D, and thyroid levels
  • Increase protein intake (aim for 60–80g/day) to support hair structure
  • Use a topical DHT blocker, like red clover-infused scalp treatments
  • Incorporate gentle scalp massage 3–5x/week to improve blood flow

Menopause: When the Changes Become Undeniable

Once you hit menopause, hormone levels drop dramatically—especially estrogen. This not only accelerates shedding, but reduces scalp oil production, leaving your hair drier and more brittle. The grays may come in stronger (and more defiant), and for many women, hair loss becomes visibly distressing.

What I commonly hear in the salon:

  • “My part looks wider. Is that just me?”
  • “No conditioner seems to help anymore.”
  • “Why am I growing chin hairs while losing hair up top?”

Science-backed care tips:

  • Use a pH-balanced, sulfate-free shampoo and hydrating conditioner
  • Apply a red clover scalp serum to help block DHT and promote growth
  • Protect fragile hair by limiting heat styling and using silk pillowcases
  • Talk to your provider about HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) or herbal support like black cohosh

Postmenopause: Embracing Your Hair’s New Normal

Hair after menopause is often finer, more delicate, and usually grayer. But it can still be beautiful.

I specialize in creating dimensional color and shape that works with your hair’s new texture, not against it. From soft lived-in blonde Balayage to gray blending that celebrates your natural silver, we craft looks that restore your confidence.

Pro strategies I use behind the chair:

  • Custom layers for volume and movement
  • Strategic highlights/lowlights to add depth to finer hair
  • Products with lightweight moisture and UV protection

Let’s Talk About Birth Control, Too

If you’re in your 20s or 30s and dealing with early shedding, listen up:

Long-term hormonal birth control can suppress natural estrogen and trigger androgen dominance (aka more DHT). This leads to early-onset hair issues that mimic perimenopause. You may notice:

  • Thinning around the temples or crown
  • Oily scalp + dry ends
  • Shedding after stopping the pill (post-pill syndrome)

Supportive steps you can take:

  • Ask for hormone testing, especially if you’ve been on the pill for years
  • Consider red clover or saw palmetto scalp support
  • Nourish your body with omega-3s, collagen, and nutrient-dense foods

❤️️ Most Importantly: Stop Blaming Yourself

Thinning, dryness, frizz, even facial hair—none of this is a character flaw. It’s a biological shift.

You didn’t mess anything up.

Maybe no one told you how your hormones could affect your scalp years down the road. Maybe you’ve been trying every product and wondering why nothing works. But now? You’ve got someone in your corner who knows how to support you through it—with science, compassion, and hair color that feels like you again.
